Volunteering Opportunities at The Children's Storefront

We have many opportunities for volunteering that require varying levels of commitment. Companies and organizations are welcome to work with the development office and/or the volunteer coordinator to arrange one-time events or recurring group events. Additionally, The Children's Storefront has a need for committed individuals to work directly with students in several different capacities. Some of the opportunities available to volunteers are as follows:

Tutoring
We are seeking people who are willing to give several hours two-three times per week to work individually with students to improve their reading, writing and math skills. Tutors will see the same children at least two times a week and will work with the learning specialists to help these students develop skills. Working with the same children over the course of the year allows tutors and their students to develop strong relationships and is a very rewarding experience for both tutors and children.

After-School Homework Help
Both the Lower School and the Upper School (grades 5-8) have after-school study hall programs for students who need help with their homework. The Lower School program serves students in grades 2-4 and runs from 4:00-5:30 every weekday except Wednesday. The Upper School program runs from 4:00-6:00. Volunteers come once or twice a week to help students with their homework and provide encouragement.

Classroom Assistance
Classroom teachers welcome helpers in the classroom. Volunteers can make copies and prepare materials for lessons and can also work directly with students to support the teacher.

Library Assistance
The library at The Children's Storefront is run entirely by dedicated volunteers. Library volunteers can assist the volunteer librarians by sorting books and reading to children.

Mentoring
Mentors work with students in seventh and eighth grade. Individuals can volunteer with the Men's Mentoring or Women's Mentoring program, in which they will accompany students on outings and help students develop a sense of self-esteem and an understanding of future career opportunities. Dedicated volunteers can also work directly with individual students by having regular lunches and discussions at school.

Computer Lab and Tech Saturdays
Volunteers can assist Steve Bergen, the CIO and computer teacher, with many tasks related to computers and technology.
