Planning Page for our One Billion Penny Project
Statement of Purpose (based on phone conversation 3/25/09 with Adam, Sheryl, Daniel, Sam, Steve)
The One Billion Penny Project is a collaborative project intending to demonstrate that "anything is possible." In the spirit of President Obama's speech at the Lincoln Memorial on January 18, 2009, we hope to show that through the positive, dynamic use of the Internet and collaboration amongst children and adults, we can change the world, one penny at a time. We will use various Web 2.0 tools to help gather 1 billion pennies. More than just a stimulus package for The Children's Storefront in Harlem, the One Billion Penny Project will help support several other worthwhile charities. All members of the team are volunteers and 100% of all donations goes to support organizations in need. The goals of the One Billion Penny Project include stimulating kids around the country and world to think about large numbers, creating a metaphor that little things matter and demonstrating how various Web 2.0 tools can be used to take the Obama challenge as described by journalist Robert Kuttner of "changing our society and democracy for the better."
3 Stages we Discussed
- stage 1 ... initial planning and swapping of ideas as we did via our speaker phone conversation yesterday
- stage 2 ... gathering clips, images ... using our networks of listservs and people to see if we can identify a tech volunteer with Web skills/animation skills/video skills to help create an exciting, dynamic YouTube Video ... one of the strategies that we have yet to resolve is what gimmick will generate others responding with their videos ... what we need are "penny ideas" which will encourage others to post their own video in response to our video(s) ... hopefully we can identify 1-2 tech volunteers with flash/video/web skills to take charge of this
- stage 3 .... begins when the first video is released (requires approval by key people at Storefront) ... stages 2 and 3 will overlap as discussed

Potential letter for listservs
As many of you know, we at The Children's Storefront launched our One Billion Penny Project two months ago and have been on NY1 television in New York and on CBS Weekend News. We would love to partner with any school that would like to support us and have already created a relationship with Horace Mann School in NY, Lincoln School in RI, Frankfurt International School in Germany and International School in Brussels. We also are seeking anyone who will be willing to help us out. We would love to find someone with any Web design, animation, video, and flash skills who might want to be part of our development team. We are planning to use Web 2.0 tools as we attempt to be the first school/organization that has gathered one billion pennies and will be selecting several charitable organizations as recipients of some of the billion pennies that we gather. Please contact me if you are interested or might know someone who you think me have some interest in such a project. I would also greatly appreciate it if you could forward this note to the community service contact person at your school. Visit onebillionpenniesproject.org for more information.
Summary as Discussed after Admin Team meeting 3/31/09: Daniel, Kathy, Alex, Steve
- We will try to recruit more volunteers per above note for several tech listservs
- We will create a YouTube channel for videos
- We will invite those who donate to reply to our video with their own 1 minute video that advocates their organization as a candidate to receive 1% of the billion pennies
- Alex and Daniel will help with the language of "what organizations are eligible" in terms of legal and non-profit status
- 90% of the 1 billion pennies goes to Storefront
- 10% of the 1 billion pennies to the 10 chosen organizations
- The closing date for the video submissions will be 1 year after launching
- There will be a link on the Storefront groundspring Web page to donate 100 pennies (or more)
- In the event that we do not reach our goal of 1 billion pennies (10 million dollars), then each "chosen organization" will still receive 1 percent of the final total when we choose to close the project
- If we reach the 1 billion pennies (10 million dollars), then each of the 10 chosen organization gets $100,000 for a total of 1 million dollars
Info from Steve to Rene at Orrick after our phone call 5/8
- We will create a YouTube channel for penny videos ... one sample one by our sixth graders is at http://www.cstorefront.org/pennies/BPChildrensStorefront0402str.mov (not yet on YouTube)
- We will invite those who donate any amount of pennies to reply to our video with their own 1 minute video that advocates their organization as a candidate to receive 1% of the billion pennies ... their organization must be a registered non-profit
- 90% of the 1 billion pennies goes to Storefront
- 10% of the 1 billion pennies to the 10 chosen organizations
- Storefront may choose to terminate the project prior to achieving the goal of 1 billion; in that case, 90% of the total amount raised goes to Storefront and 10% of the total amount raised goes to the 10 chosen organizations
- The closing date for the video submissions will be 1 year after launching the project. Each video cannot exceed 60 seconds. A small group of Storefront adminstrators will select the 10 organzations once the 1 year is up.
- There will be a link on the Storefront groundspring Web page to donate 100 pennies (or more) which also explains the YouTube video contest
- We are seeking a "terms of use" paragraph from Orrick to add to this groundspring Web page
