Excel Skills and Challenges: Classwork 1/12/11

  1. Challenge 1: Create a SS that contains all the numbers from 1 to 100
  2. Challenge 2: Create a SS that contains all the dates of 2011 along with the day of week.
  3. Challenge 3: Type these sentences into 3 cells of a SS and make each one WRAP and be a different COLOR for background.
  4. Challenge 4: Find the SUM of the numbers from 1 to 100
  5. Challenge 5: Figure out how much interest you would have if you deposited $33 in a bank at 6% interest and it is compounded annually for 30 years.

Excel HW Due Wed 1/19/11

Create a calendar for 2011 so that you put key dates on there that are relevant to you. You must use text wrap in column two and standard English with each sentence. You must include the birthday of 3 famous people and explain why you like that person. The dates must be in a form that includes the day of week. Make sure it is saved in your home folder using a names such as Jan18HulkSpreadsheet.xls

Excel HW Due Wed 1/26/11

Create a spreadsheet on PI that shows PI rounded off to the nearest decimal for each digit from 1 to 13. In other words, the left column shows the numbers from 1 to 13 and the right column shows PI rounded to that position. Click here for a sample.

Make sure it is saved in your home folder using a names such as Jan26HulkPISpreadsheet.xls

Here are the first 13 places of PI: 3.141592653589793

Excel HW Due Wed 2/3/11

Pick 10 countries of the world OTHER THAN THE UNITED STATES that correspond to either places your parents or grandparents or great grandparents have lived or visited. Plan B? If you need more countries to get to 10, then use the first letter of your name. So if your names is Jane and you have only 3 from parents/grandparents, then you would find 7 more countries that begin with J. If there are not enough, then you go to K then L.

For each of the countries, find out the population, area and then compute the density as a formula of population divided by area. We want the area in square miles, even though most of the world uses kilometers not miles. You can get all the info by clicking this webpage. When done, you will have 10 countries in one column, the population in the second column, the area in square miles in the next column and then a formula that divides population by area. At the bottom of the each column, please find the average using =AVERAGE( ) formula. Make sure it is saved in your home folder using a names such as Feb3HulkPOPSpreadsheet.xls

HW due 2/15: Make a Prime Number Machine

Type in 1003 into cell A1
Then type in 3 into cell A2
Now use your SS skills to generate the odd numbers 3,5,7,9 going down
To do this, you type a formula such as =A1+2 into the cell A2 and push RETURN.
Now you FILL THAT DOWN.
Here comes the hard part.
So in B2, you type the formula =A1/A2
This works great until you fill it down.
So need to really "wrap the A1" in money to make it be frozen
This means change it to be =$A$1/A2
This complicated formula means that A1 is a mathematical constant that will never change.
Now just FILL IT DOWN.
Save it and test it.
You have made a primer number macine!

HW due Wednesday 5/4

Create a spreadsheet that shows how much money would be in a bank if John Doe deposited $3 in 1911 and earned 2% interest for 101 years from 1911 to 2011

To be done in Excel and sent to me as an attached file using standard form May3NameSS.xls or Google Docs and shared with me (sbergen@gstorefront.org) as a "shared document"

HW due Wednesday 5/11

Create a spreadsheet that shows how much money would be in a bank if Ned O'Gorman deposited $1,000 in a bank in 1966 when he started Storefront and earned 9% interest for each year from 1967 to 2011

To be done in Excel and sent to me as an attached file using standard form May3NameSS.xls or Google Docs and shared with me (sbergen@gstorefront.org) as a "shared document"

HW due Wednesday 5/18

Create a spreadsheet that shows how much money would be in a bank if Ned O'Gorman deposited $1,000 in a bank in 1966 when he started Storefront and went to TWO different banks each having a different rate. Bank 1 is Bank of America which gave 12% interest per year. Bank 2 is Chase which gave 6% for each year. So your spreadsheet needs to have one column for each bank from 1967 to 2011. Good luck!

To be done in Excel and sent to me as an attached file using standard form May3NameSS.xls or Google Docs and shared with me (sbergen@gstorefront.org) as a "shared document"

HW due Wednesday 6/1

Create a spreadsheet that shows clearly how long it takes for money to double. Pick the amount to put into a bank in the year 2000. Now make up the name of 5 different banks. Each bank is going to be one column. Your first bank should give 2% interest and should take 36 years to double because of the rule of 72. Your second bank should give 3% interest and should take 24 years to double. Your third bank should give 4% interest and should take 18 years to double. Your fourth bank should give 6% interest and should take 12 years to double. Your fifth bank should give 8% interest and should take 9 years to double. All banks start in the year 2000 with the amount of money that you chose. In all 5 cases, you should have just the # of years to either prove or disprove the rule of 72.

To be done in Excel and sent to me as an attached file using standard form June1NameSS.xls or Google Docs and shared with me (sbergen@gstorefront.org) as a "shared document"
